2-Cycle Engines & Fuel Treatment FT-10™

2-cycle (2-stroke) engines are most commonly used in lightweight, small applications such as outboard engines, chainsaws, leaf blowers, weed trimmers, and other outdoor power equipment.

The 2-cycle engine completes a power cycle in just two piston strokes per crankshaft revolution (vs. 4 strokes in a 4-cycle engine). They can generate a lot of power for such a small package. Because these small engines use a single fill port for both engine oil and fuel, a mixture of fuel and 2-cycle oil is added to the fuel tank. Proper mixture is important for continuously lubricating the engine’s moving parts, i.e., piston, connecting rods, and crankshaft. By including Fuel Treatment FT-10 in the mixture, you will not only improve critical lubrication, but keep the fuel injectors and pump lubricated and clean as well.

Determining the Oil Mixture

  • Check your Operator’s Manual for the oil-to-fuel ratio needed for your 2-cycle engine. Often the ratio can be found on the engine label.

  • Pour the required amount of 2-cycle oil into an approved fuel can. Never mix the fuel and oil in the engine’s fuel tank.

  • Add the correct dosage of Fuel Treatment FT-10 (see the chart below).

  • Add the specified amount of fuel.

  • Stir or shake the container to thoroughly blend the mixture.

We recommend adding 2-oz. of Fuel Treatment FT-10to every 5 gallons of gasoline. For high-performance racing engines, add 4-oz. of FT-10™ to every 5 gallons of fuel. The chart below may be helpful:

REMINDER! Fuel Treatment FT-10 is NOT a substitute for the 2-cycle oil – keep using the 2-cycle oil in the fuel mixture per the engine manufacturer’s instructions.

FAQ: 2-Cycle Engine Treatments

Why only 2 oz. of FT-10™ per 5 gallons of fuel rather than the standard automobile engine dosage (2 oz per 10 gallons of fuel)? Because 2-cycle engine dynamics are very different – their parameters are more severe than water cooled/oil lubricated engines. Years of usage has revealed the best results in performance, longevity, and economy are with the 2 oz per 5-gallon fuel ratio.

Can I use both Metal Treatment MT-10® and Fuel Treatment FT-10 in my 2-cycle engine? Sure, but it’s not necessary. Fuel Treatment FT-10™ has just the right amount of MT-10® pre-blended in its formula for optimized performance and critical engine lubrication. However, if you do choose to use MT-10®, don’t use too much! Smoking and spark plug fouling can occur from too much oil in the fuel. Recommended dosage: Blend 1 oz. (30 ml) of MT-10® with 8 oz. of 2-cycle oil. Blend the oil mixture with the fuel and add Fuel Treatment FT-10™ as described above.
